Mullumbimby Town and Surrounding Area
Situated in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Mullumbimby is a beautiful country town that is the gateway to many of the stunning hinterland areas of the Byron Shire including the gorgeous rainforest area of Wilsons Creek.Driving North up the Pacific Highway from Byron Bay, Mullumbimby is approximately 4 kilimetres west of the Pacific Highway before the the towns of Brunswick Heads and Ocean Shores. After the Gulgan Road exit from the Pacific Highway take the left hand turn into Mullumbimby Road where soon after you will be met by the lasting and impressive view of the iconic Mt Chincogan as you complete your journey into town driving alongside sugar cane fields, cattle pastures and of course the beginning of the township.
Take a walk along the main street of Mullumbimby or "Mullum" as the locals call it and you will be met by an eclectic community including generations of farming families, artists, business owners, alternative lifestyle seekers, X city pats enjoying the tree/sea change lifestyle, entrepreneurs, philosophers and more.
Once you have enjoyed a latte or a Chai at one of the popular local cafes you can take a walk through the Brunswick Valley Heritage Park a reserve along the banks of the Brunswick River that is also home to over 200 rainforest plants including grevilleas, rosewood, cedars, giant water gum, hoop pines and mahogany. Heritage Park is also home to a variety of bird species and other wildlife including echidnas, possums, water dragons and other reptiles and marsupials. If you are fortunate enough to own Mullumbimby property opposite Heritage Park you will be living in what is known as the "Paris" end of town.
Back in the car again and only 7km south-west of the town is the Crystal Castle that is proud to display one of Australia's largest collections of natural, clear amethyst and rose quartz cyrstals. The owners have created a very special environment with a beautiful walk that features possibly one of the most impressive Buddha statues in the region.
Wilsons and Upper Wilsons Creek situated in the hinterland behind Mullumbimby is worth the drive to see the spectacular scenery and birdlife. During the high rain season you may not be able to travel over the causeways; approximately 14 in total, however you will breathe some delicious country air and sit in awe as you gaze at the excarpment from the 3 Ways Café sipping on your Soy Chai.
